Spring Cleaning Time at the Wigwam Resort

Good morning to all!

I wanted to start off today by thanking all the participants of the Sturgeon Excursion. For those of you that weren’t able to attend…there were some great prizes given out this weekend, and it is my understanding that all of our guests had a blast, even if they didn’t catch as many Sturgeon as they all had hoped. All of our guests conducted themselves with dignity and respect…for that I thank them. I had the opportunity of meeting a great number of you and I hope to see all of you back for next year’s festivities. Long live the Sturgeon Excursion!

From now until May 8th, there will only be Sturgeon legally caught in Rainy River and Four Mile Bay. The bit was hot a couple weeks ago, it slowed down this weekend and it probably will be slow for the next couple days (I will keep you updated though), because of the cold weather, but we anticipate it to pick up next week again as we start to see the temperature rise. On Sunday I was out in my boat and wanted to see how the ice was breaking up on Lake of the Woods…so I zipped out as far as I could, and all I have to say is, we need more warm weather fast. That is ok though, the fish will still be in Rainy River and Four Mile Bay (out in front of the Wigwam Resort) for the first few weeks after the opener…so don’t fright about the lake not being completely open yet…it will be ok, I promise.

Well it is time for another round of spring cleaning at the Wigwam Resort and we are taking the bull by the horns and cleaning every nook and cranny on the premises. The Wigwam Resort still has a few guests this week and we will meet all of their needs during the spring cleaning overhaul. For our new readers that haven’t heard about our recent transformation, I just want to let you know that from this point on, this will be the new and improved Wigwam Resort. We will strive to make sure that your vacation is exactly that…a vacation. I want the Wigwam Resort to not only be the finest resort on Lake of the Woods, but I also want it to be the most relaxing vacation that you will take, whether is be summer, winter, fall or spring. We are from here on out a service based company, which just happens to offer, fishing, hunting, lodging, a restaurant and a bar.

If you’re looking to go to paradise this year, no matter what season, the Wigwam Resort is your vacation destination…paradise without the passport. Let us share with you our little piece of paradise, the Wigwam Resort in northern Minnesota on Lake of the Woods. Remember, come June 1, 2009 every person that wants to cross the boarder into Canada will need a passport. On another front, after I had to listen about the swine flu this morning, why take the risk of going to Mexico. I believe, once you experience for yourself, everything that northern Minnesota and Lake of the Woods has to offer; you won’t want to vacation anyplace else. If you are a fisherman/woman and are looking for the perfect sporting getaway, look no further, we at the Wigwam Resort want to share our little piece of paradise with you on Lake of the Woods this year and for years to come.

My shout out today will go to my brother Ryan. I can’t wait to go fishing with you at every opportunity for years to come. Thank you for being there for me when I need you and even for when I don’t…thank you.

Happy fishing to all, and to all a good day!

Cold Start to the Sturgeon Excursion for Many, but Some See Good Results

Good afternoon to all!

I know that this is late, but I picked up my “first ever” new (used) boat today from Hoots Sports in Perham, MN and I just walked into the door at the Wigwam. My intentions were to get back to the Wigwam by 1 PM this afternoon and go out on the river and Four Mile Bay to take some pictures of the Sturgeon Excursion participants and their catch for the day, but that didn’t happen. What I do have, is some pictures that I would like to share from yesterdays catch by the participants.

The word of the day yesterday was “thirty three feet”…that was where the Sturgeon were hiding. Brian K. from IDOfishing.com was nice enough to let me share his boat for a little jaunt around Rainy River and Four Mile Bay. Most of the people that we had talked to had only caught 1 or 2 Sturgeon on the day, but there were a couple lucky anglers that had some real luck brining in about 20 Sturgeon in a group of 6 people. They were saying that the bit was slow, but the fish they caught had some size, 40” to 60”. Even though they were cold, they had fun catching the Sturgeon and then sharing the stories with us over a few pops at the Wigwam.

More and more families are getting involved in the Sturgeon Excursion and that was a key point that was told to me by Brian K. He was so happy to see the wives, girlfriends and kids fishing with their significant others and families. On a kid front…that is our future and it is just plain old fashion fun to see the kids light up when one of those “prehistoric dinosaurs” poke their heads up to say hello. I would like to see more of that and I think that may be something that we at the Wigwam will try and promote. I remember my memories as a child and many were revolving around family fishing…those were the days.

My shout out today will go to DuWayne Sonnenberg from Hoots Sports in Perham, MN. DuWayne was the lucky individual that sold me my first boat, and I wanted to thank him and the rest of the crew over at Hoots Sports for the enjoyable experience. DuWayne is retiring from a long career in the industry and I just wanted to wish him the best of luck with his retirement. DuWayne, you will be welcome in my boat at anytime…may you be blessed with many days of Happy Fishing!

Happy fishing to all, and to all a good day!

The Sturgeon Excursion is Finally Here!!!!

Good morning to all!

Welcome to another edition of the Wigwam Fisherman’s Blog. The long awaited return of the Sturgeon Excursion is finally here, and the Wigwam Resort is catering to the mass of Sturgeon fisherman that has arrived to partake in the two day event. Last night the majority of “prehistoric dinosaur” hunters found their way to the Wigwam Resort to start off the festivities. They are all filled with both enthusiasm and excitment, and they are all ready to start fishing!

We have a better than predicted weather forecast for today...I think we all thought that we would wake up with some snow and blistering conditions, but we have weather in the 40’s with a little bit of rain. The entire Sturgeon Excursion crew seemed to be relieved about the weather situation as we discussed their strategies over breakfast this morning at the Wigwam Resort restaurant. They are looking forward to great Sturgeon fishing today and tomorrow.

As I spoke with Brian K. from IDOfishing.com this morning with Tom Briggs (Owner of the Wigwam Resort), over some eggs, bacon, hash browns and coffee, he was telling me about his fishing experience from yesterday. He stated that they started in the gap with very little luck, and then proceeded to where most of the boats were, and now are anchored, and have been for the past few weeks, in front of the Wigwam Resort. He said that his boat (that carried his wife and daughter) wasn’t having the best of luck, but boats all around him were brining in the fish left and right. After that statement, Tom spoke up and said (which sums it all up), “That’s why they call if fishing and not catching”…we all proceeded to have a good chuckle. Everyone seems to be going along with the weather, putting a smile on their faces, and feeling excited to go see if they can wrestle with some monster Sturgeon today.

As stated in previous posts, if you want to stay at the Wigwam Resort next year for the Sturgeon Excursion, don’t wait to long to book your stay. The participants that are staying at the Wigwam are putting down their deposits for next year already. Our rates for lodging next year for the Sturgeon Excursion are $30.00/person per night. Book now, or forever hold your peace.

On a Wigwam Resort note, don’t forget, you don’t need a passport this year to get to paradise. We have it right here in northern Minnesota on Lake of the Woods…we would like to share with you our little piece of paradise called the Wigwam Resort, for as long as you would like! For booking information, please call our knowledgeable staff at (800) 448-9260. For all of you who put together your group trips, please give me a call directly and I will present you with an offer “that you can’t refuse” (for all of you Godfather fans). I want to make sure that the people that have all the responsibility of putting together the trips are taken care of. So the next time you are faced with that job, you will know who to call, not Ghostbusters, the Wigwam Resort!

My shout out today will go to all the Sturgeon Excursion participants. I wish you all the best of luck fishing today and tomorrow for those “prehistoric dinosaurs”! Stay warm, stay safe, and I look forward to hearing all about your adventures tonight and tomorrow over a few pops.

Happy fishing to all, and to all a good day!

Two Days and Counting...STURGEON EXCURSION!!!!

Good morning to all!!!!

We have another wonderful looking day in northern Minnesota “God’s Country”, and I want to welcome you all to another edition of the Wigwam Fisherman’s Blog. We are only two days away from the Sturgeon Excursion and the excitement is starting to overflow at the Wigwam. I hope all the participants are ready for an excellent weekend of fishing, food and fellowship among like minded fisherman…I know I am. I can’t wait to meet you all for the first time, and I hope that I will see you many times throughout the years to come.

The ice is finally dissipating at a good rate close to the Wigwam docks…so all of you that asked about the ice around the docks now have your answer. We anticipate all the ice being totally gone by this Friday (two days away).

Once again the boats are in front of the Wigwam Resort in Four Mile Bay hammering the fish, Sturgeon and Walleye. Rainy River is still a bit muddy and the debris is flowing…I hope that it will settle down here within the next few days. We still have cold water temps, which mean that the bit is a little slow, but if you’re out in front of the Wigwam, you’re still catching fish and having fun. There has been good size to the fish (Sturgeon 50”-60” and Walleye 20”-30”) and we anticipate that to keep steady throughout the next few weeks as the fish are making their way into the river to do “their business” before they make the journey back into the big lake.

I also want to mention that we had one lodge room open up for two people if anyone is interested in staying with us at the Wigwam Resort during the festivities (April 22 – 25), please call our office if you are interested, remember, first come first serve, so don’t miss out.

The Sturgeon Excursion is only 2 DAYS AWAY…YES!!!!!!!! As mentioned yesterday, there are some festivities that will be held at the Wigwam Resort that you won’t want to miss…it has now been officially opened to the public. There will be a fish fry on Friday April 24Th and a buffet meal/raffle on April 25Th at the Wigwam Resort for the Sturgeon Excursion crew, guests and now the public. If you are interested in joining these fun filed events, please contact our staff at the Wigwam Resort for more details at (800) 448-9260. Don’t miss out if you’re a fan of fishing, or just a fan of having good old fashion fun, because there will be a ton of it at the Wigwam Resort on Lake of the Woods.

Remember, you don’t need to get a passport this summer to get to paradise. Join us at the Wigwam Resort on Lake of the Woods and let us share our little piece of paradise with you. You will get a taste of our northern Minnesota hospitality, wonderful food, unbelievable fishing and most importantly our fellowship among fishermen/women. We understand that you can go anywhere you want to go on your vacation, and if you decide to stay with us at the Wigwam Resort, you will be treated as one of our family members. We can’t wait to meet you and look forward to seeing each and every one of you this coming spring, summer, winter and fall fishing seasons.

My shout out today will go to a couple of great individuals that I had the opportunity to meet last night with my brother. They are all part of the world renowned service crew with Marvin Windows and Doors (Derek, Jeff and Kevin). There dedication to service is what I wish to bring to the Wigwam Resort. Thank you for sharing your stories and you are all welcome in my boat at anytime. Best of luck with everything, you are truly the best in your trade.

Happy fishing to all, and to all a good day!

We Have a Beautiful Day For Fishing at the Wigwam Resort

Good morning to all!!!!

Welcome to another edition of the Wigwam Fisherman’s Blog. Today we have excellent spring conditions for some awesome fishing on Four Mile Bay. The sun is out and it’s about 50 Degrees Fahrenheit. I sure wish I was out on the lake with some of my friends this morning to enjoy all that there is to offer.

I had the pleasure of speaking with some of our guests before they headed out this morning and everyone has the same speech. Rainy River is very muddy and there is a lot of debris in the river, which is making for some difficult fishing in the river. But as I’ve stated to them, and as I’ve stated in previous posts, the fish are in Four Mile Bay, right out in front of the Wigwam Resort! I don’t know why people aren’t listening to me. The people who have faith in what the Wigwam Fisherman has been saying are having a blast catching fish, not wasting time maneuvering around debris. I want everyone to catch fish…so please heed my advice…I won’t steer you in the wrong direction…I promise!

The Sturgeon Excursion is only 3 DAYS AWAY…YES!!!!!!!! I haven’t mentioned this yet, but there are some festivities that will be held at the Wigwam Resort that you won’t want to miss…it has now been officially opened to the public. There will be a fish fry on Friday April 24th and a banquet meal/raffle on April 25th at the Wigwam Resort for the Fishing Excursion crew, guests and now the public. If you are interested in joining these fun filed festivities, please contact our staff at the Wigwam Resort for more details at (800) 448-9260. Don’t miss out if you’re a fan of fishing, or just a fan of having good old fashion fun, because there will be a ton of it here at the Wigwam Resort on Lake of the Woods.

My shout out today will go to one of my friends, and former alumni with me from Ferris State University, who now plays hockey for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Chris Kunitz. Chris and his wife just had a baby boy last week and named him Zachary. Kunny, congratulations on the new addition to your family buddy. I also need to mention this…best of luck in the playoffs.

Happy fishing to all, and to all a good day,

Is it Spring or Fall????

Good morning to all!!!!

Welcome to another edition of the Wigwam Fisherman's Blog. Well, I’m sitting in my office at the Wigwam Resort and have to look at my phone to see the date again, and then I have to take a double take…its April 20, 2009 and it’s snowing! I thought that when I moved back from Michigan on February 16Th that I would only have about another month and a half of winter left. Then it would be spring…the ice would melt on the lake and we would not see anymore snow until next October/November...at least that's what I had hoped. I must have miscalculated that by just a little tiny bit…ha ha. Well I guess that’s why they call northern Minnesota the “Great White North”.

We are less than 3 weeks away from the open of fishing season…YES!!!! On a fishing report front; there are only a few brave souls this morning out in the bay and on the river...it is just so cold. The weekend brought many happy fisherman to Four Mile Bay and Rainy River though. On Saturday night most of those happy fisherman came to the Wigwam Resort to wet their whistles and reminisce about the Sturgeon and Walleye that they had caught that day and throughout the week. I heard a wide range of stories, from the quantity of fish, to the size, and it was just making my mouth water…I wanted to go out and catch those fish! Over the weekend, just on this end of Rainy River, I would say that there was about 175-200 boats out fishing on a daily basis in a 3 mile section of the Four Mile Bay and Rainy River…pretty impressive.

For all of you whom are looking forward to the Sturgeon Excursion…its 4 days away and counting…I hope you’re excited, because I know I am. The Wigwam Resort will start receiving guests as soon as Wednesday for the now electrifying yearly event, which will be held April 24Th, 25Th & 26Th this year. Every person that calls that is looking for updates on the bite, is grinning from ear to ear on the other end of that phone after I give them the update. I know this because, their excitement is evident in their voices. For the people that are not familiar with the Sturgeon Excursion, come on down to the Wigwam Resort this Friday and Saturday night and get a feel from the participants first hand of what it’s all about. You will leave happy campers, I promise.

My shout out today will go to my dog Vancouver (Golden Retriever)...I know he won’t be able to read this, but he took his first swim this weekend in a pond behind my house. The way he jumped right in and grabbed that stick would have made any dog owner proud. I hope he shows that sort of enthusiasm when hunting season come around this fall. I can’t wait to take him fishing with me everyday this summer...I just hope he doesn’t want to jump off the boat. I’m sure we can get that under control though…so here’s to you little buddy!

Happy fishing to all, and to all a good day!

It's a Cold April Morning For Fishing, But it Doesn't Stop the "Prehistoric Dinosaur" Chasers

Good morning to all!!!!

Welcome to another edition of the Wigwam Fisherman’s Blog. Saturday April 18, 2009, will bring cold weather and maybe a couple snow flakes to our little piece of heaven in northern Minnesota we call Lake of the Woods, but it isn’t stopping those Sturgeon enthusiasts today. At 7 am this morning when I rounded the corner at Wheelers Point on the way to the Wigwam, which I heard was thumping last night by the way; I couldn’t believe the amount of vehicles that were at the public access ramp. There must have been about 60 trucks with trailers lined up and they were putting in one right after another, it was as if they were on an assembly line back at an auto plant back in Michigan. It’s a wonderful site to see.

The word on the street is; Rainy River is still very muddy and cold, which only can mean one thing, you aren’t going to be catching the fish in Rainy River. Like clock work the boats are swarming out in front of the Wigwam Resort in Four Mile Bay. After speaking with the “prehistoric dinosaur” chasers as they entered the Wigwam after a long fruitful day of fishing, they all are catching fish and as stated yesterday there is some size to these suckers. People are claiming that they are catching plenty of 40”-50” and a couple 60”. The common theme is that everyone is catching fish and having a blast!

The Wigwam update; we are starting to book more and more people for next years Sturgeon Excursion and winter ice fishing already, this is coupled with the frenzy of phone calls for this coming summer season. We are going to be providing a different type of service for years to come and the word is out! We want you to have the best experience possible while you stay with us. Whether you’re looking a fun time or just a relaxing vacation, along with the best fresh water fishing in the world, in my opinion, the Wigwam Resort is the place to stay on Lake of the Woods. Please give myself or our knowledgeable staff a call at (800) 448-9260 to put together your vacation to paradise, without having to even pull out your passport. Come experience our little piece of paradise we like to call the Wigwam Resort on Lake of the Woods.

As I was surfing the web the other day I came across a great quote that I have to share with you, and from my law school days, I know that everyone may interpret the same statement in their own way, so as I share this with you, remember this is strictly my opinion, it will tie back to the “People are claiming” sentence in the second paragraph and it should make sense. “…of all the liars among mankind, the fisherman is the most trustworthy”, William Sherwood Fox, Silken Lines and Silver Hooks, 1954. How I interpret this is; I think that fisherman don’t lie about the fish they catch, but they may exaggerate about to how big the fish they catch actually is. Just my two cents…I thought that was an interesting quote and just wanted to share it with you today.

My shout out today will go to some of my old roommates from college. Colin Muldoon, Derek Crimin and Brian McCullough…this job has given me a reason to be able to connect with some old friends, and hopefully, I will be able to take them fishing in the near future…I am very grateful to be able to reconnect. To all of you, I miss you guys and can’t wait to be able to see you guys someday in the near future. There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think of something crazy that happened at the “Trailer” and that always puts a smile on my face. Each was an excellent hockey player, but each has become an excellent man. I wish you and your families all the best…now get up here so I can take you fishing and we can reminisce about our college years…”prove your self”!

Happy fishing to all, and to all a good day!

It's A Great Day For Fishing!!!!

Good morning to all!

I have been asked by a number of people throughout the week; what is the weather going to be like this weekend? Well, I have followed weather.com very diligently, and per their flipping of the coin, we were supposed to have rainy days Friday, Saturday and Sunday. As of 8 am this morning and I have pictures it was overcast and cloudy, now as of 10 am Friday April 17, 2009, all is see is sun and no clouds. I know there is a massive weather system heading this way though, so I will have to update you on Saturday, as she comes tomorrow, and subsequently, Sunday as she comes on Sunday. I wish I could predict the weather; I’d have everyone following the Wigwam Fisherman Blog…ha ha.

On a daily basis now I have been informing the readers that there are plenty of boats out in front of the Wigwam in Four Mile Bay…today I have the proof. Also I wanted to give you an update on the local public ramp…it is first come first serve and there was plenty of action over there this morning as I drove by.

On a Wigwam note; as stated yesterday we are jam packed for the Sturgeon Excursion this year and are starting to fill up for next year, so if you want to be where the action is at, don’t hesitate and miss out, call our office and book your trip today. Also, I am looking for the fisherman trip planners; I want to do something special for the guys that carry the burden of putting the trips together. If your wondering what I’m talking about, please give me a call at the Wigwam Resort (800) 448-9260 and I will lay it out for you. Let’s just say you will want to set the hook right when I tell you about it.

We are 3 weeks to the day away from the opener of fishing season May 8Th, and I can’t wait. We are starting to put together bus trips from all over the country, and the Wigwam Resort is back on the map for summer fishing! I have people coming in from Pennsylvania, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and let’s not forget all of our interstate travelers, the boys and girls from Minnesota. They are all looking to experience our northern Minnesota hospitality, magnificent fishing, and refreshing night life. This is your vacation; we want to treat you as such. I am excited to show everyone what we have to offer at the Wigwam Resort on Lake of the Wood, in my opinion, the best fishing in the world!

Finally, my shout out today will go to a great guy I met a couple weeks ago, while playing in an alumni hockey game with my old Penguins team in PA. For you that have seen the movie “Slap Shot”, you will be familiar with the phrase, “We want the Hanson’s”. They are all fellow Minnesotans and will always have a place in my boat. I hope to see you a couple times this summer when you’re passing through, and as I told you, we will catch a lot of fish and tell a lot of great stories, fishing and hockey.

Happy fishing to all, and to all a good day!

The Sturgeon Excursion is Right Around the Corner

Good morning to all!!!!

Well we are finally getting some warm weather to break up most of the ice on Rainy River, but there is still about 50 yards of ice left from the Wigwam docks to the open water in Four Mile Bay. The public access ramp is fully open at Wheelers Point, so if you have a floating trailer, you welcome to come on down and drop it in.

Sturgeon season is still another 8 days away, but I know that people are catching and releasing some nice fish out in Four Mile Bay (right in front of the Wigwam) and in Rainy River. The word on the street is that those who are out fishing are experiencing tremendous success. I can hear the hooping and hollering all the way in my office…the boats are about 300 yards away from our docks and it sounds like they are having a blast. There are some good size to the “swimming dinosaurs” this year also…per the local talent. So get your pole, circle hook and a big gob of crawlers and lets catch some STURGEON!

I am getting more and more phone calls looking for rooms, but as I stated earlier this week, “the Wigwam Resort is completely booked for the Sturgeon Excursion”. My friend Brian K. with IDOfishing.com and the rest of their staff have totally out done themselves this year. They are expecting a record number of anglers…this is going to be a blast. If you haven’t made your reservations for next year, I would highly suggest doing it as quickly as possible. The Sturgeon Excursion is now a yearly cornerstone event on Rainy River and Lake of the Woods, and people are already booking a year in advance. You may be asking yourself why? I’ll tell you why…they want to be at the Wigwam where all the events will be held and where the fun is at! We can only hold 130 people (for now) and more and more Sturgeon fisherman are starting to emerge out of the woodwork. Don’t put it off another day; get your room/cabin reserved for next year right now, we are already starting to take the reservations!

If you are the person that puts fishing trips together for groups of 10 or more…I think you should be taken care of. Give me a call at the Wigwam Resort (800) 448-9260 and I will let you know what I mean. You won’t mind putting together that trip next time, only if you know you’re going to the Wigwam. We want to hook you up!

My shout out today will go to my Mom. I feel like I’m playing hockey again and the camera is coming over and I want to say hi to the entire family, but I think to myself about the one person that was the glue, my mom, and that is why I will say, Hi Mom! I just learned that my mother will be able to spend the summer with us kids, in northern Minnesota this summer, and I am truly excited. This is the first time our family will be in the same area together in roughly 17 years. I can’t wait for the home cooked meals…getting my fridge stacked with goodies on a weekly basis…the laundry being done…the dishes getting done, ha ha Mom, I’m just kidding. We are so happy to have you come home and be with all of us this summer; we want this to be your summer of relaxation. You have been working so hard, for so long, we want you to just sit back and relax. I want to take you fishing with me as much as possible, or just ride in the boat and kick your feet back and watch me do some fishing…ha ha. Love you and can’t wait to see you in June!

Happy fishing to all, and to all a good day!

Coming Full Circle...The Wigwam Fisherman's Tale

I was asked by one of the forum readers to share my story about how I came become the General Manager of the Wigwam Resort on Lake of the Woods. To effectively tell the story I have to start from the beginning…I hope it’s not to long and I hope you enjoy. The picture is of my little brother Ryan and I (I am the one on the right). We had this picture taken, because at that very moment I knew what and where I wanted to be for the rest of my life...I will never forget it.

Growing up in International Falls, MN I was given the opportunity of participating in outdoor activities, such as, fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, etc., and lots of sports, such as, hockey, baseball, football, etc., well my tale starts and ends with a little of both.

I was raised the son of an ex-United States Marine (tunnel rat) and local business owner of the NAPA auto parts store in International Falls, MN. My father only believed in raising us kids (me, my brother and sister) on a stiff dose of discipline. Starting at a very young age, I believe right around three, my father and grandfather started taking me on their fishing trips up to Red Gut Bay and Black Sturgeon, on the Canadian side of Rainy Lake, I vividly remember this as if were yesterday. My grandfather was never further than spitting distance away from his Folgers coffee spittoon, and my father was always diligently trying to read his now ancient, Hummingbird depth finder. That is my first memory of fishing and the first time I knew what I truly wanted to be able to do for the rest of my life. These were the days before Game Boys, Atari, and light years behind our Sony Play Stations that we know today. I knew of fishing and that’s what I wanted to do.

As the years past, during the summer we would frequented the Red Gut Bay and the Black Sturgeon area of Rainy Lake…we stayed for a month every summer at the Fisheries Resort on Rainy Lake (Canada). At the age of 10 I was taking (stealing) the family fishing boat (a 14’ with a 9.9 Honda) to go into the bay around the corner from the resort and come back with three to four walleye every time. This was at the amazement to my father…he wasn’t happy, but he told me, I was born to be a fisherman. My father started teaching me how to tie my own lures, and as he was teaching me, it was like I was his shadow, right in his hip pocket never missing a thing. This was an occurrence for years to come.

During the winter months from 10 on, I found another love…hockey. Well what else was I going to do being from International Falls? All of my friends played, so I told my father that I wanted to give it a shot. As any supportive father would do, he agreed. Throughout my teenage years I was a little small, but excelled at the sport, more and more of my attention was focused on hockey, but that was only the winter. My father made sure that are summers were always filled with plenty of fishing and fellowship with family. I didn’t mind…I had the best of both worlds. From that point on, all I wanted to do when I grew up was play professional hockey and be a fishing guide…it was destine to be.

After high school I was given an opportunity to go to college at Ferris State University (CCHA) in Big Rapids, MI on a hockey scholarship. I had to move far away from home and my family, but they understood it was an opportunity of a lifetime, even though it was eighteen driving hours away. They knew that they wouldn’t be able to be in the stands or watch many games on TV. That is where I had the best opportunity to play and excel…my family was so supportive. I always told myself that I would come back during the summers and continue fishing, but what we want to happen doesn’t always happen.

Michigan brought new friends, and division I college hockey brought new challenges. After my freshman year I came back for a month, but hockey was going to have to be my life if I wanted to play professionally. I was going to have to go somewhere where there was year around ice and great competition. I needed to not only keep up, but excel. So after a month back home with family and friends I headed back to Michigan to train with teammates and some of my college competition. Needless to say I wasn’t fishing with my Dad, and that was the only hard part about having to leave, but he always said, “Jean-Paul, you have to do what you have to do, we will be here for you if you need us”. I got that every year through college. As the years past I made it home less and less, fishing less and less.

After college my hard work had paid off, I signed my first professional contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins (NHL). I spent the entire year in the AHL with the Penguins top minor league team the Wilkes Barre/Scranton Penguins. That year my father was only able to make it to three games, but the family was able to watch me quite often on TV…so I felt I still had a connection. The following year I signed with the Chicago Blackhawks (NHL), because I felt that was my best opportunity to play in the NHL that year. After playing in two pre-season games I was very confident that this was my opportunity to shine, but once again I was sent down to the AHL in Norfolk, VA. I was told, “Don’t worry about it, you will be down there for a few games, you will get your shot and when you do, we see a bright future for you in our organization”. The ninth game of the season we were playing the Providence Bruins and I went out of my way to hit some one, and consequently tore up my knee. After four surgeries, I was told that I would never be the same and was declared 60% disabled in my left leg…all at the age of 25. I felt as if my dreams would never become reality.

After hockey I was given an opportunity to work for a college teammate’s father’s construction supply/fabricating/management company out of Detroit, MI. I was devastated by my hockey career being done and couldn’t face my family and friends back in MN, even though they were exactly what I needed. I had totally lost sight of my childhood dream. After a year of sulking, my father bought a plane ticket that he couldn’t afford, to come out and cheer me up. When he got to Michigan he wasn’t happy with what he had seen, but he was still my ex-marine loving father and spoke words to me, which I will take to my grave, he said, and I quote; “You have been able to do something that 99.9% of kids whom strap on the skates only dream to do. You should hold your head up high and be proud. Is this the first time in your life that you have faced adversity”, he asked. I replied “no, but everything I have ever worked for is gone and I don’t know who I am anymore”. He said, “Everyman doesn’t find out who they truly are, until they truly face massive adversity, how you move on with your life will show the man you are and the man you will to become…I can’t help you figure that out, but I know the blood that runs through your veins, and I know the boy that I raised. Just know that whatever you do, we are proud of you and are here for you.” I crumbled into his arms and sobbed like I was a little boy and said, “I know who I am and I know what I want to do”. Then my father as quickly as he arrived, he was gone again.

After the “talk”, I moved on and never looked back. I went on to become the CFO of the company, go to law school and even make a couple bucks along the way, but there still was something missing.

In 2003 we learned that my father was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer, attributed to Agent Orange from Vietnam. While he served 18 months over there, he had no idea that the stuff they were using to clear the jungle would eventually take his life. They gave him 3 months to live. That wasn’t the end of him though, that hard nosed s.o.b. made it 3 years and finally fell on February 9th, 2006…our entire family was at his side as he took his last breath. I miss my Dad. But from tragedy comes opportunity. I didn’t want to miss out of anymore of my life chasing something that I really didn’t want. I was looking for the challenge that I had been waiting for my entire life.

After my fathers passing I had been looking for the right opportunity to move back to northern Minnesota, back to my family, back to my roots. On December 26th, 2008, I came back home to do a little bit of ice fishing with my little brother (whom isn’t that little anymore). During that trip, we reconnected and it was if I had never left. I said to myself, this is what I’m missing, this is where I want to be, and asked my brother to look for any jobs in the resort business on the lake that might come available. I told him that I didn’t care if I had to clean fish for eight hours a day…I wanted to be somewhere that I was truly happy…that place was on the lake.

I returned back to Michigan later that week, every minute I was thinking about how can I get back home? On January 21st, my brother called me with some news of a resort owner looking for some help. I asked him, “What is his number, I want to call him tomorrow morning”, my brother replied, “His name is Tom Briggs and he is the owner of the Wigwam Resort”. I said, “Where is the Wigwam and; before I said another word, I said, “I don’t care just give me his number, I will handle the rest”. My brother gave me Tom’s number and I called Tom the next morning. We played a little bit of phone tag, but we finally connected. He explained to me what he was looking for and I said, “When do you want me to start”. He said, “We haven’t even talked about the particulars”. I said, “You won’t be disappointed and I am very easy to please”. We both had a chuckle.

I have just received my Captains License and can’t wait to start guiding this summer…when I can. I just purchased my own fishing boat for the first time in my life…my only regret is that my Dad isn’t hear to share it with me, but I know that he is looking down from above. I have completed my first full month of work at the Wigwam Resort, and truly believe, that my Dad is still looking out for me, he has found me the best job in the world! I have truly come “full circle”.

I know that this was a novel, but if you made it through it, you now know where I came from, and why I will put my heart and soul into this job.
