Amazing Memorial Day Weekend for Walleye Anglers on Lake of the Woods!!!!

Good afternoon to all,

Welcome to another edition of the Wigwam Fisherman’s Blog. Today’s addition will be a little different...I received an e-mail from one our guests today and I thought this was pretty neat and wanted to share this with everyone. If there is anyone who is thinking about coming up here this summer, this should seal the deal. I hope you all enjoy and I will be back with another edition tomorrow telling the story about another group that had an amazing time this weekend…the Gunnerson’s. Please enjoy…I did!

Jean Paul,

Thanks for a great weekend! I tried to create an account to Blog but couldn't get through on this computer. Dave Blaszak supposedly gave you our pictures from Sunday's catch. For the record, here is the fish count in just 4 hours of fishing:

WALLEYE COUNT - SUNDAY, MAY 23, 2009
FISHERMEN:
Bill Zumbek - Elgin, IL
Steve Zumbek - McHenry, IL
Dave Blaszak - Tinley Park, IL

The following Walleye count happened in just 4 Hours off of one of my fishing holes last Sunday. I don't know what the record is but we had to come close! Our pictures will support this claim. We anchored in one spot and never moved.

1 29"
1 28"
1 25"
2 24"
2 23"
6 22"
6 21"
10 20"
24 19"
10 18"
12 17" - 14"
12 SAUGERS
35 JUMBO PERCH
1 DOG FISH

All fish were caught and released. We kept one limit of (12) 19" Walleyes and the largest (6) Saugers, plus the 35 Perch.

During an average day of fishing, each Person in the boat will catch fish, and usually someone will get one BIG one. As you can see this was an exceptional day!
We literally caught fish each and every time we dropped in the water. It was the sizes of the fish that was most impressive. I've had a lot of good days, but nothing like this in the past.

Memorial Day Weekend Weather on Lake of the Woods

The front that moved in Thursday 5/21 shut-down the bite considerably. On Friday, a secondary front came through with heavy in the early evening. By Saturday high pressure had moved in with a N.E. Wind at about 10 MPH. Even with slightly warmer temperatures, the bite was still slower than earlier in the Week. On Sunday, due to the large volume of boats in the gaps we went across the Lake on a light south wind. We did not get out until 11:00 AM. The temperature must have warmed to about mid to upper 60's, mostly sunny. Water temperature was 54 degrees. We anchored and jigged with (Live) Shiner Minnows, using no more than 3/8 oz jigs. The largest Walleyes were caught on the smallest jigs with Fuzzy Grubs added for effect. I lost at least 4 other large Walleyes equal to or larger than those reported. So did my other two fishing partners. What a great day!

Sincerely,

Bill Zumbek
Elgin, IL

There was one other thing I wanted to add to today's blog. We had the pleasure of having one of our guests over the weekend get on stage to sing with the band, "Poor Boys", and no one was expecting what they got. The drummer of the band (Danny) even joked as he got on stage that they were going to have to get a step ladder so that he could reach the microphone...the joke was on all of us! I just wanted to say thank you to Buddy Kahle of Blaine, MN...you were amazing and ROCKED THE DOORS OFF THE WIGWAM!!!! We all are looking forward to your return...thanks again! We were fortunate enough to have them recorded with a camera phone...I have put both on YouTube...check them out, if you don't, you're missing out!
