Even the Fish Flies Can’t Slow the Walleye Bite on Lake of the Woods

Good morning to all!

Welcome to another edition of the Wigwam Fisherman’s Blog. Last Friday the Fish Flies started there transformation and began to bombard land, but even with the hatch, the Walleyes are still being caught in great numbers. What that mean to me is, this is going to be a great summer of Walleye fishing on Lake of the Woods…I love it! This past Tuesday Vancouver and I had the day off and went fishing for some big Musky, we trolled and cast for over 6 hours, but they eluded us this time…haha. I guess I’ll just have to wait to go next Tuesday to see if I can find out where they are hiding this year…wish me luck.

If you haven’t become a fan of the Wigwam Resort-low on Facebook, what are you waiting for? I’m posting on there daily and have found it a great way to communicate with everyone on a regular basis. For example, we are coming up on the North Star Summer Walleye Classic Tournament at the Wigwam Resort on June 26, 2010. I have posted a special discount on lodge rooms for all the participating teams…$20 per person, per night. I will be posting all of our weekly meal specials and drink specials on there also. Take advantage of Facebook and everything it allows you to do. We look forward to having you as our friends on Facebook.

Jody and I have finally got the garden planted, what a task, but I’m sure the rewards will be plentiful. Now all we have to do is finish the deck…haha. We are still lacking the handrails, but Jody’s Dad is going to help us with that one. As soon as it’s complete we can have the “Deck Party” we’ve all been waiting for. I hope it comes sooner than later…haha.

Announcements…If you’re looking for some great fishing and lodging deals, check out the June Specials we will be offering on our website www.wigwamresortlow.com. We are running a Super Summer Special for the balance of the summer, until September 1st. Tom would like to celebrate his 12th year of ownership, and help more people experience Lake of the Woods, by offering $25.00 per person, per night lodging in our lodge every day (midweek & weekend). We would also like to offer $25.00 per person, per night lodging in our cabins, midweek only (Sunday night – Wednesday night) some restrictions will apply to minimum numbers of guest per cabin. Each lodging charge is subject to applicable federal, state and local sales tax. Applicable to new reservations only. I also wanted to tell you all about our Veterans and Armed Forces Special, which we have running 365 days a year. Wigwam Resort gives Veterans and our currently enlisted Armed Forces a 10% discount on any package plus whatever specials we are giving. We want to thank you all for your service…God Bless America!

Today’s “Quote of the Day”…”A bone to the dog is not charity. Charity is the bone shared with the dog, when you are just as hungry as the dog.” – Jack London. On Tuesday night my Mother returned from Arizona, where she was taking care of my Grandma and Grandpa Day, and it was the first time I had the chance to see her since last summer…boy it felt good! While we were over at my sister’s house visiting, my brother’s son Hunter was reading a book, and I asked him what it was. He replied to me the name of the book and I asked him if he had ever read the book “The Call of the Wild”, by Jack London, and he said no. This is one of my favorite books of all time and I suggested he read it. I know I’m kind of going off script here, but when I saw this quote it hit me like a ton of bricks, because of my nephew and something else that happened on Tuesday night as Jody and I were coming home from my sister’s. Just as we got back home Jody received a phone call from Nina (Tom’s Wife) about one of our guest, who was about 3 miles south of the resort on 172 when there car caught on fire. They were able to get their children and dogs out of the van, along with about half of their supplies before the vehicle was engulfed in flames. Half of their possessions were destroyed by the fire. Within 20 minutes of this devastation a group of good Samaritans had stopped to help. Tom, Jody and I were able to get them into their cabin, dry their cloths, get dippers for their baby, give them cloths that Jody and I had planned for the Salvation Army, and give them some extra food, which we had so they could try and relax after the whole ordeal. Even today two days after the incident, people in the community are calling up and asking if they need anything else, and they are willing to do without to make sure that this family doesn’t have to go without during their vacation to northern Minnesota. What a community I’m blessed to be apart of! The family and the Wigwam Resort thank you all immensely. This current event puts Jack London’s quote in perfect perspective for me, and it shows the Charity of our great community in Baudette, MN. I hope this will help in your lives; once again, it has my…God Bless.

Daily Fishing Report: Today should be cloudy with occasional showers for the afternoon, high 67F with winds ESE at 5 to 10 mph…there will be a 50% chance of rain. Tonight we should have rain showers in the evening will evolve into a more steady rain overnight, low 53F with winds E at 10 to 20 mph…there will be a 70% chance of rain. Friday we should have showers, highs in the mid 60s and lows in the low 50s. Saturday we should have a few showers, highs in the upper 60s and lows in the low 50s. Sunday we should have plenty of sun, highs in the mid 60s and lows in the low 50s. Today’s fishing report will be provided by myself, Tom Briggs, Billy “The Sniper” Kloos, and Kevin “Tall Tale“ Olmstead. The Fish Flies have started there hatch and are starting to swarm the main land, which isn’t to good for fishing. We anticipate this to last for the next few days until they start dying off. So where I’m going with this is, the bite maybe a little slow this week because of the Fish Flies. This weekend 31’- 32’ feet on the US/Canadian border was the place to be…it was on fire! I have never caught so many big fish at one time in my life…Lake of the Woods baby, Lake of the Woods. Frozen Shiners and Chubs can be used with similar results out there right now, but I still prefer the frozen Shiners. A “Walleye Chop” helps considerably, but with a light wind, we’ve still been having success. The best method has been anchoring and jigging, so if you plan on anchoring in the big lake, the best type of anchor to use is a spike anchor with at least 100’ of rope. 3/8 oz Jigs (Pink/Gold & Chartreuse/Green) with frozen shiners were the golden tickets this weekend and week. Tom has been heading up to the 9 footer and has been having great results also with the same method, lures and bait. You can purchase your Jigs and Frozen Shiners from the same place that I get them from, Log Cabin Bait, which is about ¾ of a mile south of the Wigwam on 172. I hope to see you all up here, but if you can’t make it, keep checking out the fishing report…I’ll give you all the hard facts as soon as I find out where they’re hiding next. Good luck and Happy Fishing to all! Thanks for fishing with us and visiting with us at the Wigwam Resort on Lake of the Woods.

Happy Fishing to all, and to all a good day!
