Warm Temps Could Cause an Early End to Ice Fishing Season 09-10

Good morning to all!

Welcome to another edition of the Wigwam Fisherman’s Blog. Well let me get right to the business at hand…I’m sure that all of you are wondering about ice conditions…here we go. The good news is, the ice thickness is holding up only in the big lake, the bad news is, we still aren’t getting those freezing temps we were supposed to get as of a couple days ago and from the present forecast, the weather doesn’t look to be changing for the next few days, tomorrow at the earliest. We are supposed to get mid teen temps this weekend, even a bit of snow, but I hope not that much. Adrian’s road and all of Four Mile Bay are closed to any traffic…I wouldn’t even drive wheelers out there. As of now it is business as usual for the week and weekend, but I will keep you updated as to any changes in the Daily Fishing Report, which is found on our website at http://www.wigwamresortlow.com/. I will keep you all updated to any changes, good or bad.

Yesterday Tom, I, Kevin and Doug moved 7 ice houses down from the Reefs to 4-1/2 miles northeast of Long Point where there is better ice most importantly and more fish. After drilling and banking 4 houses we dropped lines, but didn’t have any bait, so we had to use Chubby Darters, within 15 minutes we had 6 in the house…not big fish though…we had 5 Saugers and 1 Walleye. Today “The Boys” moved the rest of the houses off the Reef to the same location. In a week we will be fishing off of Graceton Reef…I will keep you all posted to that though.

Today’s “Quote of the Day”…”Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.” – Leo Buscaglia. Jody gave me this quote this morning, and after looking through a ton of inspirational quotes, I think this one was the best. This sticks out so much; in a perfect world I wish we all lived by this quote…I believe it would make our world a better place. I try and live by this quote day in and day out, but I find myself drifting away sometimes, and just seeing this quote brings it back to the forefront. There are people out there that actually try to help us in very subtle ways each and everyday, and I want to try my best to be that person for each and every one of you. Thanks for the Quote babe, and for helping me become a better person each and every day.

The lures that have still been working well are the “Gold Disco Ball aka “Strobe Jigs” (made by JB’s Tackle)”, “Stop Signs (Pink or White)”, “Macho Minnows (Pink/Gold, Green or White)” “Glow Pink Charmers (made by Tom’s Tackle locally in Baudette), which just happens to be my favorite lure to date” and “Chubby Darters/Rapala Rattling Jigs”. You want to be using anything that glows right now to get the best success possible…white and pink have been the best! All these items can be purchased at Log Cabin Bait and Tackle, which is about ¾ of a mile south of the Wigwam on 172. Remember that Vexilars are not required, but they help immensely when fishing off the bottom and marking suspended fish, which has been a common occurrence these days on Lake of the Woods. So, where I’m going with this one is, get a Vexilar today…you won’t be disappointed!

ATTENTION STURGEON FISHERMAN!!!! I want to remind everyone that Sturgeon Fishing Season is right around the corner and the Wigwam Resort will be hosting two separate events for Sturgeon enthusiasts this April. There are still rooms and cabins available for the Fishing Minnesota Sturgeon Excursion April 16th, 17th & 18th, and there is only a few rooms left available for the In Depth Outdoors Sturgeon Excursion April 22nd, 23rd & 24th. We will be having a fish fry each Friday (17th & 23rd) and Roast Buffet on each Saturday (18th & 24th)…everyone is welcome to participate in each event…the more the merrier. If you’ve been waiting to fish Sturgeon this is the perfect time of year to do it…there will be plenty of people to help you find out all the secrets to a successful Sturgeon fishing trip. See you all there!

Announcements…4 Wheel Drive will be the live entertainment this weekend (March 19th & 20th). It’s finally here this weekend…The Bikini Ice Fishing Team will be here on March 18, 19 & 20. Daily Fishing Report: Today will be cloudy, high 43F with winds NNW at 5 to 10 mph. Tonight will be overcast with areas of dense fog, low 31F with winds NW at 5 to 10 mph. Tomorrow we will have areas of dense morning fog...partly to mostly cloudy, high 43F with winds light and variable. Tomorrow night should be partly cloudy skies, low 26F with winds light and variable. Wednesday we should have more clouds than sun, highs in the low 50s and lows in the low 30s. Thursday we should have a few showers, highs in the upper 40s and lows in the upper 20s. Friday should be mostly cloudy, highs in the low 40s and lows in the low 20s. Then the next few days it will continue to get colder, with even snow on Friday night (the 19th) and Saturday (the 20th), which should help us out for next weekend and the following week. Adrian’s has officially closed the road in Four Mile Bay, but there are other access points on the south shore of Lake of the Woods to get out to great ice and it is business as usual for us at the Wigwam until such time we determine it is no longer safe. Last night we pulled our houses off the Reefs and moved them in closer to shore to follow the fish, we are about 4-1/2 miles northeast of Long Point into 32-36 feet of water. Today’s fishing report will come from myself and our guides. Pink, White and Gold are still the magic colors on Lake of the Woods. Vexilars are not a must, but suggested…I won’t even fish if I don’t have a Vexilar these days. Tom and I started moving our ice houses from the Reef to the Long Point area yesterday, because the Reefs hadn’t preformed to expectations the past few days and we want everyone to catch fish…after we drilled the first 4 houses, we had to do a little exploratory fishing, which I wasn’t complaining about. With no bait and just Chubby Darters, we were picking them up one right after the other…I’m sure with a little bait on the lure the fish are going wild this morning. I will update the fishing report tomorrow morning to let everyone know how we did out there today. The lures showing the best success rates are the “Gold Disco Ball aka Strobe Jig by JB’s Tackle”, “Charmer Jig (Pink) by Tom’s Tackle, the Pink or White Florescent “Stop Sign”, “Macho Minnows” and “Chubby Darter/Rapala Rattling Jig” (all can be purchased at the Log Cabin Bait store approximately ¾ of a mile before the Wigwam on 172). Use anything that glows right now, whether it is pink or white. Also give the plain gold jigs/Disco aka “Strobe” balls a try. The ice thickness out there is currently 30-34 inches on the big body of water. Good luck and Happy Fishing to all! Thanks for fishing with us and visiting with us at the Wigwam Resort on Lake of the Woods.

My shout out today will go to all “The Boys” we have working the ice this season…Kevin “The Crazy Canadian” Marchuk, Doug “The Surgeon” Hagen, Shane “Wiggles” Burk, Jake “of the Woods” Magness, AJ “The Cooler” Anderson, Noah “Baby Face” Johnson, Dillon, Steve & Billie “The Sniper” Kloos. It’s been a long season and we are almost at the finish line…I don’t know where the days have gone, but it has passed us by so quickly. You guys have done a great job this season…keep it up down the home stretch and be ready for the “Off the Ice Party” in a couple weeks.

Happy Fishing to all, and to all a good day!
