Lake of the Woods Inspires Anglers Each and Every Day

Good morning to all!

Welcome to another edition of the Wigwam Fisherman’s Blog. I hope everyone has great plans for Memorial Day, no matter what it is. The rain pounded Lake of the Woods County yesterday with sheets of rain all day, but we bared the storm and are ready to get back in that boat. Last Sunday, May 23rd, my buddies Mike Myers (pictured below with a 30" Walleye) and Robert Riege were out in 30 feet of water on the US/Canadian border, setting hook after hook on the biggest Walleyes they’ve ever constantly caught. Mike informed me of 20 plus Walleyes over 23 inches…WOW! He told me it was the best day of fishing he’s ever had, and he’s a Lake of the Woods regular and Wigwam patron. I wish I could have been with you guys, but that’s the way the cookie crumbles.

Jody and I are now well on the way to finishing the deck, which means more fishing time…I like that. I’ll be out on the lake this Thursday and put the jigs, spinners and Rapalas to the test and let you know what to use when you get up here this weekend. We want you to have a great experience and everyone deserves to have some fun while visiting our backyard.

With Memorial Day Weekend soon to be on us, this is a day of remembrance for all our veterans whom have fallen, while during battle, or at home from related causes years down the road. Each and every one of them goes out into the battle field with the knowledge that they might not return. This is a feeling that many us have never felt and never want to feel. The solider prepares themselves to the best of their abilities before battle, freely knowing they could face the ultimate price. Being the eldest son of fallen US Marine, whom served in the Vietnam War and survived the battles, but on February 9, 2006 fell to lung cancer attributed to Agent Orange. He lived with ambition and love for his blessings, all of his life, so when it was time to lay down to rest, he did so knowing he was blessed with a good life, and in my mind that’s what remembering Memorial Day is all about. The ability to live free, and live our lives in any way we do choose…I can’t imagine living my life any other way. Live with ambition and love for your blessings each and everyday and I bet your life improves from it. If mine has, so can yours…God Bless.

Daily Fishing Report: Today we should have mainly sunny sky, high 73F with winds W at 10 to 20 mph. Tonight we should have clear skies, low 47F with winds NW at 10 to 15 mph. Thursday we should have sunshine, high 72F with winds NNE at 5 to 10 mph. Friday we should see a few clouds, highs in the low 70s and lows in the upper 40s. Saturday we should have a mix of sun and clouds, highs in the low 80s and lows in the mid 50s. Today’s fishing report will be provided by me, Billy “The Sniper” Kloos, and Kevin “Tall Tale“ Olmstead. Thirty 26 - 30’ on the US/Canadian border should be the place to start your day. With the heavy rain and winds we had a few days ago, the lake has been turned up a bit, but the bite is still good. Frozen Shiners and Chubs can be used with similar results. A “Walleye Chop” helps considerably, but with a light wind, we’ve still been having success. The best method has been anchoring and jigging, so if you plan on anchoring in the big lake, the best type of anchor to use is a spike anchor with at least 100’ of rope. 3/8 oz Jigs (Pink/Gold, Red/Black, and Chartreuse/Gold) with frozen shiners were the golden tickets this weekend. You can purchase your Jigs and Frozen Shiners from the same place that I get them from, Log Cabin Bait, which is about ¾ of a mile south of the Wigwam on 172. 2010 Walleye Opener on Lake of the Woods was a Hook Setting Event Enjoyed by Thousands

Good morning to all!

Welcome to another edition of the Wigwam Fisherman’s Blog. I wanted to start off by thanking everyone that paid us a visit for the 2010 Walleye opening weekend. There were plenty of fish caught, which was no surprise to this Lake of the Woods resident and fishing enthusiast. I believe from talking with each of our guests that everyone had a fabulous time this past weekend. The goal for most all of our guests this weekend was to catch fish and share their stories over their favorite beverage in the Cabana Bar, and by hearing all the stories, I think the goal became reality for most. For the 2010 Walleye Opener weekend we had more boats than I’ve ever personally seen on opening weekend on Lake of the Woods. The word is out about where to go if you’re looking for the best Walleye fishing in the World! Thanks to everyone that shared their experience, it motivates us to hear that everyone is having such a great time. It was a great start to what I hope is a fantastic summer of fishing on Lake of the Woods.

On a side note, Jody, her father (Wes), some of our friends, and I, have been working diligently on Jody’s deck, and the fruits of our labor are starting to make a beautiful picture. Last night was the first time in about a week and a half that Jody didn’t have to walk into the house on a cooler and that made her mighty happy. Thanks again to everyone, it means so much to have people in your life that care and want to help. God is really looking after us and we feel very fortunate.

Today’s “Quote of the Day”…”Be at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let every new year find you a better man.” – Benjamin Franklin. How true it is…how true it is. I am constantly at war with my personal vices, as I’m sure every person is, and that’s what we have to remember, we’re all in this together. Each and every one of us is fighting something internally, which might be big or small, but something none the less. After reading this quote, it really jumped out of the water and into my boat…pardon the terrible pun there, but it’s the truth. We should all be at peace with our neighbors, even the testy ones…haha. We should also try to better ourselves each and every day. No one’s perfect, we ALL have room to improve on some aspect of our lives, even if we think there’s not. I’m not a philosopher by any stretch of the imagination, but this is something every person on earth can aspire to do, and that’s what makes it so great. Benjamin Franklin was an amazing individual and it seems ire to think something that was said over 200 hundred years ago still holds true today. I hope that this year finds you a better person than last…God Bless.

Daily Fishing Report: Today we should have a mix of clouds and sun, high 76F with winds S at 5 to 10 mph. Tonight we should have partly cloudy skies with a stray shower or thunderstorm is possible, low near 50F with winds light and variable. Tomorrow should be mainly sunny, high 78F with winds SSW at 5 to 10 mph. Tomorrow night should be mostly clear, low 52F with winds SSW at 5 to 10 mph. Wednesday we should see a few clouds, highs in the upper 70s and lows in the low 50s. Thursday should be mainly sunny, highs in the upper 70s and lows in the mid 50s. Friday we should see a few clouds, highs in the upper 70s and lows in the mid 50s. Today’s fishing report will be provided by me, Billy “The Sniper” Kloos, and Kevin “Tall Tale“ Olmstead. It looks like the lake was the big winner this weekend. People did catch plenty fish in Four Mile Bay directly southwest of the green marker in the channel, but it wasn’t quite as good as the lake. Where we were having our best success was right outside Lighthouse Gap. We started fishing in 22 feet of water, but by the end of the days found ourselves fishing in 27-29 feet. The Walleyes started moving out because of heavy fishing concentration in the 22-24 foot range. We were anchored and jigging all weekend, but I did see some people drifting and still pulling in some fish. On Sunday we had a little less wind than on Saturday and it seemed to be that when the wind picked up we started to catch the Walleyes…there’s something to be said about a “Walleye Chop”. If you plan on anchoring on the big lake, the best type of anchor to use is a spike anchor with at least 100’ of rope. 3/8 oz Jigs (Pink/Gold, Red, and Chartreuse/Gold) with frozen shiners were the golden tickets this weekend. Only 2 More Days till the 2010 Walleye Opener on Lake of the Woods

Welcome to another edition of the Wigwam Fisherman’s Blog. This past week I have been working diligently to get ready for the Walleye Opener and build a deck. One has been going very quickly and the other is taking much longer than I anticipated, and I bet everyone can tell which is which…haha. As far as the Walleye Opener goes, things are coming together very nicely. This year’s weather forecast for the opener is outstanding, I wish I could get into a time machine and fast forward a few days…I have a terrible case of “Walleye Fever”. Last night I took out all my rods and tackle boxes and started to get them ready for Saturday. After I had completed all of my necessary tasks, I put my own little touch on some of my lures, with a little lure tape Jody had purchased for me while we were out in Montana. I can’t tell you how my “upgrades” will work, but rest assured, you will find out in due time, good or bad.

Today’s “Quote of the Day”…”Remember when life’s path is steep to keep your mind even.” - Horace. Jody forwarded me this quote yesterday, I think because of what I’m going through with the deck right now…haha. All sarcasm aside, each and everyday, life’s path throws us different and unique curveballs. To combat each unique obstacle correctly, we should keep an even/level mind. From my law school days, I know that each individual interprets things differently. The way I interpret this is, stay calm and collective under pressure and it will allow you to make the right decisions, no matter what pressure you’re under. During my younger years, I didn’t abide by this concept and it cost me dearly with each and every wrong decision I made. Now as a wiser and somewhat older man, I live by this concept and the decisions I make these days are usually the right ones. I hope this will help everyone who is facing steep challenges keep an even mind when making decisions, big or small…God Bless.

Tonight we should see rain early...then remaining cloudy with showers overnight, low near 40F with winds N at 5 to 10 mph…there will be a 70% chance of rain. Tomorrow we should see showers in the morning, and then partly cloudy in the afternoon, high 66F with winds NW at 5 to 10 mph…there will be a 40% chance of rain. Tomorrow night we should have partly cloudy skies, low 46F with winds SW at 5 to 10 mph. Saturday (Walleye Opener) will be mostly sunny, highs in the low 70s and lows in the low 50s. Sunday there will be occasional showers possible, highs in the upper 60s and lows in the upper 40s. Monday we should have times of sun and clouds, highs in the low 70s and lows in the low 50s. Today’s fishing report will be provided by me and a few of our local fishermen. Here Comes the Rain to Lake of the Woods…YES!!!!

Good morning to all!

Welcome to another edition of the Wigwam Fisherman’s Blog. As the weather starts to produce rain in Northern Minnesota, we welcome it with open arms. Today I had the opportunity to take Vancouver (my rambunctious Golden Retriever) for a drive south of Baudette to “scope out” some potential deer hunting areas for this coming fall. What I saw was truly a blessed sight, green grass, trees flowering and budding and plenty of wildlife, from deer to bear and everything in between. As we were driving, I thought to myself, how lucky I was to be able to experience this each and every day…someone's really looking out for me.

Sturgeon fishermen and fisherwomen alike have still been frequenting the Rainy River, Four Mile Bay and Lake of the Woods; trying to get their pictures taken with those prehistoric dinosaurs…I love it! But as this portion of the Sturgeon season comes to a close today we will see the decrees in traffic for a week until the Walleye opener May 15, 2010…then it’s Walleye season…GAME ON!

Today’s “Quote of the Day”…”There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.” - Colin Powell. Today’s quote has meaning, just as each and ever other quote of the day does, but this is so too the point, it is sometimes overlooked. I’ve been there, hoping and wishing that I’ll get lucky and success will fall into my lap, but the fact of the matter still stands, as Colin Powell stated, “There are no secretes to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.” I wanted to say that again, because it is right there for us all, preparation plus hard work, plus learning from failure equals success. Success can be whatever we make it, it could be success at learning math, it could be success at work, and it could be success on the lake (my personal favorite). I will be the first to tell you that I don’t know everything about fishing, but I try and learn new things each and every day I’m out on the water. The fact of the matter is I fail more than I succeed, but I try and learn from my failures, not repeating them again. I work hard each and everyday to become the best possible person and fisherman that I can be. I know that’s a little cliché, but whatever success is awaiting you, it can be obtained by heeding Colin Powell’s quote, “preparation, hard work and learning from failure”. Go out and be successful at whatever you choose. I hope this inspires you to shoot for success in all aspects of your life…God Bless.

Tomorrow should be partly cloudy skies, high 53F with winds NNW at 10 to 20 mph. Tomorrow night should be clear, low near 30F with winds WNW at 10 to 15 mph. Sunday should be generally sunny despite a few afternoon clouds, high near 60F with winds SW at 5 to 10 mph. Monday should be mostly sunny, highs in the low 60s and lows in the upper 30s. Tuesday we should have more clouds than sun, highs in the upper 50s and lows in the low 40s. Today is the last day to keep a Sturgeon until July 1, 2010, and at that time the season to keep a Sturgeon will last till September 1, 2010. Things will be a little quiet till May 15, 2010 when the flood gates open for Walleye season. With the warmer weather we had in April, the Walleyes haven’t really congregating in the Rainy River as they had in years past. Where there hiding out this year could be Four Mile Bay, Lighthouse Gap, Morris Gap, and all around Pine Island, that’s my bet, and also where you’ll find me fishing on opener. All the Elements are in Line for a Perfect Weekend of Sturgeon Fishing for the 2010 In Depth Outdoors Sturgeon Excursion on Rainy River and LOW

Good morning to all!

Welcome to another edition of the Wigwam Fisherman’s Blog. Well I just got back from a little excursion of my own up north of the border, and boy we sure had some fun. On Tuesday I headed up north with Tom and some friends to do a little Crappie fishing, but as we found out it’s just a little to early for the Crappie bite. We did manage to find some great Perch holes though, and I just happened to catch the BIGGEST PERCH I HAVE EVER CAUGHT…it was so awesome. As soon as I set the hook I thought that I had a Walleye, because of the head shaking that was going on, but when I saw it, the blood started pumping just a little bit quicker. I should have taken some measurements and gotten it mounted, but I guess that just means I’ll have to go catch myself a couple more…I hope :).

Some of the IDO guys have been here for the past few days, and from the sounds of things, they have been very happy with the Sturgeon fishing in Lighthouse Gap, Four Mile Bay and Rainy River. Tonight we should be seeing a few more of the guys, and then tomorrow we will see the balance…let the festivities begin!

Wow, that’s “Wisdom” in a nut shell. I have been very fortunate in my short life to be associated with some wise individuals, and this is exactly what they preached, day in and day out. Since a young age, my Father always told me to keep my mouth shut and my eyes and ears open if I wanted to ever learn anything…who said parents don’t know anything…haha. Now I find myself learning new and exciting things each and everyday in the real world by obeying his words. I am so thankful that I had such a wise teacher. Each and everyday people have the opportunity to gain wisdom, whether it be at work, home, on the lake, or anywhere. After seeing this written out, it looks so easy, but we all try to make things as difficult as possible some times, even me. I firmly believe that we all have “Wisdom”, and for us to spread our “Wisdom” we must teach others. I will be the first to tell you that I don’t know everything, but I do know a little about fishing Lake of the Woods and I hope that I can pass a little of that knowledge on to you, and make this world a better place…God Bless.

Daily Fishing Report: Today will be sunny, high 68F with winds WSW at 5 to 10 mph. Tonight will be mainly clear, low 34F with winds SW at 5 to 10 mph. Tomorrow should be mainly sunny and warm; high 73F with winds NNW at 5 to 10 mph. Tomorrow night should be partly cloudy, low 39F with winds ENE at 5 to 10 mph. Saturday should be mostly cloudy with highs in the low 70s and lows in the low 40s. Sunday should be partly cloudy, highs in the mid 60s and lows in the mid 30s. Monday we should have a mix of sun and clouds, highs in the mid 60s and lows in the mid 30s. Today’s fishing report will come from me and some local fisherman, and will be no different from the last posting. If you’re a Sturgeon fisherman there are only a few places you’ll want to be for the next week or two, that’s in Lighthouse Gap, Four Mile Bay and the Rainy River down to Wabanica Church. Everyone’s catching Sturgeon out there right now in good numbers, and there are also some BIG STURGEON being caught…plenty of them being 60” plus. All you need is your heavy duty pole, 50 lb test line, 3 oz sinker, a 1’ – 2’ mono leader, a circle hook and a gob of crawlers, and you’re in business! Good luck and Happy Fishing to all! Lighthouse Gap and Four Mile Bay Produce Big Sturgeon for the 2010 Fishing Minnesota Sturgeon Excursion

Good morning to all!

Welcome to another edition of the Wigwam Fisherman’s Blog. I wanted to start by thanking each of the Fishing Minnesota members for allowing the Wigwam Resort to play a roll in your 2010 Sturgeon Excursion. It was pleasure meeting many of you, and hearing about each of your newly created Sturgeon adventures throughout. There was one gentleman in particular, Mr. Lonnie Staples from Mankato, MN. Lonnie was visiting us with the Matt Cake Group, and it just happened to be Lonnies first time fishing Sturgeon when he hooked into a 68” X 28” monster Sturgeon…what a specimen! When Lonnie came into the Wigwam after Friday’s day of fishing, he was all smiles and couldn’t wait to share his story…now that’s what it’s all about! I hope to see many of you up here in the near future creating your own fishing tales from Lake of the Woods.

This past weekend brought us many new faces to the Wigwam Resort, many of whom are just starting to Sturgeon fish and still have so many questions. All I have to say is keep asking questions from the guys that do it frequently and try it all out. Sturgeon fishing isn’t too complicated, but you need to have the right equipment to fully enjoy the experience. Next weekend we will be hosting the 2010 IDO (In-Depth Outdoors) Sturgeon Excursion and it would be another great opportunity to come up and take a couple lessons from the guys that have been fishing for Sturgeon for years. Reeling in a monster Sturgeon is truly an accomplishment and something to cherish. For those of you that are able to read my blog on a regular basis, and for those of you whom I call my friends, each of you could probably guess that I am most definitely an “optimist”. I’m a firm believer in this quote, and by living this way, it has greatly improved my life day in and day out. I surround myself with hard working optimistic people whom want to learn and face new challenges…I have no room for a pessimist. I fully understand that everything doesn’t always workout the way we plan, even with an optimistic approach and a smile on your face. What it does do, is fill our hearts with the belief that something can be done, and whatever it is, we’ll do it with a smile on our faces and a positive attitude, so others can feed off of us to accomplish our goals. Be the optimist, not the pessimist, and you will live a happier and more fulfilling life. Take it from me first hand, it really works, my life today is a perfect example of that…God Bless.

Wednesday we should have plenty of sun, highs in the low 60s and lows in the low 30s. Thursday the clouds should be giving way to some sun, highs in the mid 60s and lows in the mid 30s. Friday we should have times of sun and clouds, highs in the low 70s and lows in the upper 30s. Today’s fishing report will come from me and some local fisherman, and will be no different from the last posting. My shout out today will go to the Myers family in Warroad, MN. I just learned today that Lynda Myers (age 64) just lost her 11 month battle with cancer…I’m so sorry for your loss. The Myers family has been our family friends since my folks moved from International Falls to Warroad in the summer of 1992. The best treatment for your loss, will be what the best treatment for me was when I lost my Father to cancer back in 2006, surround yourselves with family and close friends and remember the great life they lived. Nothing is going to take the pain away, but being able to fill your heart and mind with the great memories from the years past, helps ease the pain a little. Our hearts and prayers are will you guys…God Bless.

As the Walleye Fishermen Leave Rainy River, the Sturgeon Fishermen Come in Heavy Numbers

Good morning to all!

Welcome to another edition of the Wigwam Fisherman’s Blog. Well I hope everyone has had a great few weeks, I know I have. Jody and I just got back from vacationing in Montana with my cousin Andre and his wife Chrissy. I wanted to say what a beautiful country we all have to roam. We put on over 3,200 miles and I could show you picture after picture of endless mountain ranges, but that would just get boring…haha. Jody was able to take so many great pictures, but I think this one is the best (me with a Brown Trout), which was caught off the shores of the Bitterroot River, about 15 miles away from my cousin house in Florance, MT. We also were able to do some skiing in Big Sky, MT, which just happened to be the first time I skied in over 20 years, and we managed to ski some of their toughest hills and live to tell about it, which is absolutely awesome!

Just as our trip seem to start we had the pleasure of getting a flat tire, not really a pleasure, but I guess its all how we look at things. We were on our way to a Minnesota Wild game, when just before Moose Lake we hit a pot hole and blew one of the tires. This was not my first blown tire, so without panic I proceeded to get the spare tire off the back and jack up the car, but what was waiting was a little testing. When we pulled off the side of the road, we unfortunately were on a narrow stretch of the road and were in the mud. I worked to try and break the nuts loose while Jody directed traffic, so as to be safe, but every time I jacked up the car and gave the wrench a turn, the nuts wouldn’t break and the jack sunk into the mud and consequently the car rolled off the jack. This happened about 7 times before a nice woman stopped to see if we needed any help. Jody was able to get some phone numbers from this kind woman and before you know it help was on the way. Ironically the woman that helped us, her name was Hope, and as if it was a message, never give up “hope” during tough times, optimism and a positive attitude will be your best weapons. After help arrived, it still took him about 25 minutes to break the nuts loose, but they were free, and we were able to continue down to the game, which we were able to get there for the beginning of the second period. It was an awesome start to the vacation and it seemed to never end throughout the entire trip! Thank you so much to all that helped…good deeds never go unlooked…thank you.

Today’s “Quote of the Day”…”An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest.” – Benjamin Franklin. After being on vacation and traveling the country side for the past two weeks, I would have to say that this quote seems to say it all. An investment in knowledge can mean a literal education form an institution, or by the way I interpret it, which is; everyday gives us the opportunity to experience something new, and every new experience is a way to educate ourselves in life. This will reward us with knowledge and personal experience that no one can ever take away. By being able to take a few dollars, which Jody and I had saved during the winter, we were able to travel and see many new and exciting things for both of us. So the next time you take a drive out of town, go to your local museum, or go fishing on Lake of the Woods J, you will have the opportunity to educate yourself about your surroundings, in my mind this is the best investment. I hope that this will help people be able to live more enjoyable lives, enjoy your surroundings (no matter where you’re at), and also help you to remember that an education isn’t just something you have to pay for. The opportunity of an education is surrounding us and waiting to be learned each and every day…God Bless.

Daily Fishing Report: Today will be windy with a few showers from time to time…it will be warm high 73F with winds S at 20 to 30 mph…there will be a 30% chance of rain. Tonight should be mostly clear skies, low 42F with winds SSW at 15 to 25 mph. Thursday should be cloudy with gusty winds, high 57F with winds W at 20 to 30 mph. Friday we should have considerably cloudy and windy, highs in the upper 50s and lows in the low 30s. Saturday we should have plenty of sun, highs in the low 60s and lows in the low 30s. Today’s fishing report will come from me and some local fisherman. Within the past few weeks there have been massive amounts of Walleyes, and a number of them have been “Big Walleyes” (30 Plus Inches) caught all the way from Birchdale to Lighthouse Gap. Today is the last day of Walleye fishing on Rainy River and Lake of the Woods till May 15, 2010, which is when the Walleye season will open for the summer. Over the past few days I’ve had the pleasure of going out and doing some fishing after my vacation, and it was fantastic. I didn’t catch any monsters, but the bite was steady and strong …it was a blast. Everyone that will be coming this week and the next few weeks will be searching for Sturgeon and I hope to have a great report for you by Friday. For now, I know that they have been catching Sturgeon, each and every day, right out in front of the Wigwam Resort in Four Mile Bay and on the Rainy River. I will have exact depths for you in a few days to help you all out a little further.
